The Codex Zouche-Nuttall is a pre-Columbian document, produced between 1200 and 1521, of Mixtec pictography. Zelia Nuttall recovered the codex and published it with an introduction interpreting the content and detailing its historical context.

The reinstatement of the festival was the culmination of Nuttall’s career, which was dedicated to the recovery of ancient Mexican life. After centuries of salacious narratives of exaggerated Mexican savagery spun by European colonizers, Mexico’s present-day people could take pride in their culture. The entry of women into Archaeology and Anthropology in the early twentieth century would signal a change in how the fields viewed the cultures of the past and the contemporary descendants of those cultures. By using the tools of their science, women like Nuttall attempted to redress the harmful narratives of colonization that had long dehumanized Indigenous people of the Americas.

Born in San Francisco to an Irish father, Nuttall was more drawn to her Mexican mother’s heritage and native home than her Euro-American roots, and archaeology gave her the special tools and insight to explore both. Late-nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century archaeology was in many ways a Euro-American colonial and imperial enterprise. Western countries’ claim to Indigenous ruins and their accumulation of artifacts and monuments had become a way for these nations to broadcast their imperial power around the globe.301 This collecting of ruins and antiquities gave Euro-American archaeologists the opportunity to control not only the material history of these sites but also stories about their people and knowledge about their cultural past. Colonizers thus had the power to present an image of Indigenous people in whatever way served their purposes and further justified imperial domination.
